Pearl Principle Book Review

Momi Ching’s Review

on the Book,

The Pearl Principle

by

Teacher Nelia

The events that happened on September 28 & 29 in the year 2004 was quite vague to me, inspite of the many pieces of information I gathered and the discussions I heard about what transpired over the years. Recently, I came across a book during a book launch held at Makati Sports Club on September 30, 2008. The book is entitled, The Pearl Principle, Ang Diwa ng Perlas ng Silanganan authored by an educator, Nelia Cruz Sarcol, better known as, Teacher Nelia.

As I read the book, a window of hope opened up for me. I could vividly see and feel what transpired during those two (2) days when a throng of 518 people was given a question as simple as,

“WHAT IS YOUR DREAM FOR YOUR COUNTRY?”

Simple as it may seem, it sparked & ignited a magical reaction from this big group of ordinary Filipinos just like you & me. This was the beginning of an endless discussion about the dreams of people and the great love for the country. I could just imagine the pouring of their pent-up emotions kept in their hearts for a long time but could not find the right venue to unleash them until that fateful event when anything goes but everything matters!

Surprisingly but expectedly, the big group painted a beautiful picture of the PHILIPPINES.

The components of the beautiful portrait of the Philippines are:

· each participant’s ROLE in converting the Filipino dream into a reality

· The People’s VISION

ü Urgency

ü Competence

ü Congruence

ü Enlightenment

ü Self-sacrifice

ü Service

· The Ten (10) TENETS of a true Filipino Philosophy that will serve as a guide to a way of life aligned to the People’s Vision:

1) Adversity is the catalyst of growth and success.

2) Transformation is the proactive engagement of one’s sphere of influence.

3) Every person has inherent gifts that can be used to overcome challenges.

4) People can reinvent themselves at will.

5) Introspection is the key to unlocking the right core values that guide our discernment for change.

6) Self-sufficiency is a philosophy that we can nurture to eradicate mendicant behavior.

7) Personal success is only a means to an end: making the world a better place.

8) Success is measured by the number of people whose lives have improved because of our existence.

9) Wealth accumulation is only justified when it is re-channeled to uplift the quality of life of communities through purposeful intervention.

10) Change begins from within . . .change begins with me.

When all of these components were put in their right perspective, the big question that followed was:

“WHAT’S NEXT?”

With this question, forty two (42) leaders were commissioned to further their new found cause with a weapon to guide them through a long journey. Each of them received in the palm of his hand, the symbol of hope and transformation . ..

The PEARL

After having read that inspiring book when it was launched in September of 2008, I have the same question, “What’s next?’ Surprisingly, my question was supported when I received a telephone call last year, from an old man who was a participant during that September, 2004 asking whatever happened to that event after 5 years. He said something like, “Sayang naman iyong “euphoria na na build up nuong panahon na iyon!

Yes, that euphoria is still continuing to build up! I am a strong believer that everything will happen at the right time. God will direct and guide us when an endeavor is about to reach a tipping-point because it is written.

There is this common expression,

“ABANGAN ANG SUSUNOD NA KABANATA”!

Sounds familiar?

Light the Fire Within

The Pearl Principle

As a young man, I carry with me what many older people would usually call “idealism”. They define it as “innocence”, something which, according to them, has to be abandoned in order to survive the “real” world. They abandon it in exchange for a paradigm which they call “practical”. Without knowing it, they eat cynicism, apathy, fear, hate and boxed-up thinking for breakfast. I refuse to abandon idealism. I refuse to embrace their paradigm. I never went wrong with my idealism, and I don’t intend to go wrong now. Idealism reminds me that good always trumps evil. It makes me see truth and love as something that could defy everything—that there can be no boundaries. Idealism, therefore, is something I am very proud of. It is the reason why I am passionate. It is a fire I will light within me forever.

Our country needs this fire burning within the hearts of each of its citizens. This fire will make them furious to know that their country is the least competitive country in Southeast Asia (World Competitiveness Scoreboard 2009), and ranks a dismal 71st place out of 125 countries (2009 Global Competitiveness Report) on account of, among others, insufficient infrastructure, lower productivity and efficiency, and deteriorating quality of education. This fire will make them break the chain of betrayal by our leaders. They will say “no more to corruption and poverty!”

The Pearl Principle, as a national philosophy, can light this fire within each Filipino, and lead us to the path of recovery. We will discover not a new Philippines, but the true Philippines—a land whose veil no hopelessness can pierce.

The Legend of the Pearl of the Orient

The first stanza of our national anthem, Lupang Hinirang, goes “Bayang magiliw,Perlas ng Silanganan, Alab ng puso, Sa dibdib mo'y buhay.” This is embedded in our national anthem and our countrymen sing this all the time, yet they do not know exactly how we came to be known as “The Pearl of The Orient Seas” in a historical and cultural sense. The Legend of Pearl of the Orient lets each Filipino discover “why”, by relating the historical events and folktale handed down from generation to generation.

The Pearl Principle, shared with the story of The Pearl of the Orient, can be the guiding principle of our country. Its alternative title is The Little Blue Book, just like China’s Mao Zedong’s The Little Red Book, coined by the West for its pocket-sized edition for easy carrying. While The Little Red Book is aimed at transforming Chinese society, The Little Blue Book is aimed at transforming Philippine society.

In our beloved motherland lies a new era—an era in which Filipino workers, students, teachers and leaders embrace The Pearl Principle. Once The Pearl Principle is adopted by more and more Filipinos, there is created an inexhaustible source of strength and a passion capsule of infinite power. It will revolutionize our people's thinking. It is my hope that every Filipino will embrace the Pearl Principle and bring about a new nation-wide high tide in the application of The Pearl Principle, and strive to bring our country to its true state—the great and magnificent country—The Pearl of the Orient.
Know More About The Pearl Principle
I therefore call on every Filipino to read about the Pearl Principle authored by Prof. Nelia Cruz Sarcol. Our country can go a long way if every one just takes to heart said principle.

Sphere of Influence and the Spirit of Volunteerism

Sphere of Influence is a pool of idealistic individuals who are dedicated to doing little things in the hopes of making our country better. Plainly moved by the spirit of volunteerism, and guided by The Pearl Principle, each member initiates change from within and within one's sphere of influence. Each member transforms a state of hopelessness into a state of optimism where opportunities are created as in the creation of a pearl.

Be a Sphere of Influence Volunteer!

If you (an individual or organization/collective) believe in and accept The Pearl Principle as your philosophy, and you wish to contribute to the country's upliftment, be a Sphere of Influence Volunteer and help promote The Pearl Principle (i.e. by increasing awareness on The Pearl Principle; setting up organizations for social change). High School clubs and college associations may apply for grants. Grants take the form of Pearl Principle Formation Schools (PPFS)* and/or social entrepreneurship to liberate people from poverty. Adult organizations, on the other hand, may apply for grants on entrepreneurship. As you implement your projects, Sphere of Influence will assist you in the creation of your newsletters and websites.

*The PPFS is part of the Pearl advocacy- our effort to initiate positive change in our community and country. The PPFS, in particular, is our response to illiteracy in the urban and rural parts of the country.

Sphere of Influence Adheres to The Pearl Principle

Sphere of Influence adheres to The Pearl Principle. The Pearl Principle: Ang Diwa ng Perlas ng Silanganan" probes deeply into what could be a workable modern-day Philippine ideology. Through its “Ten Tenets of the Pearl Principle”, it presents its worldview “that is rooted in the transformation of adversity into a gem of a life … as in the creation of a pearl.”

The Pearl Principle

The author of The Pearl Principle is Professor Nelia Cruz Sarcol. Said principle can be found in her book, “The Pearl Principle: Ang Diwa ng Perlas ng Silangan.”

The Pearl Principle Movement advocates the transformation of individual Filipinos, and of the entire Filipino nation, through the application of the principles behind the birth of a pearl. The Pearl Principle is the Ideology for National Development of the New Filipino.

"Iniibig ko ang Pilipinas. Gagawin ko ang lahat upang siya’y maiangat sa pagkakasadlak.” This is a pledge that Teacher Nelia and other advocates of The Pearl Principle solemnly swear to. If more and more Filipinos would just keep the essence of this pledge to heart, then perhaps the Philippines will be able to conquer the adversities of the past and the present and subsequently shine forth to the rest of the world.

The Pearl Principle is shared with the “The Legend of the Pearl of the Orient”, a book also written by Professor Nelia Cruz Sarcol. The Legend of the Pearl of the Orient is an illustrated storybook that depicts the perilous journey of merchants from prehistoric China in search of wealth of the neighboring lands by which to trade. Shipwrecked, they are guided by the like glitter of lights from the islands of what are now the Philippines. They think that the lights come from legendary mermaids who are said to possess pearls that have extraordinary glitter. However, the shipwrecked traders are rescued by the island’s inhabitants, who showed them that the greatest treasures are found in the hearts of the people.
